At My Healthy Bliss we have long known that we are Heliophiliacs. We find our easiest peace and deepest joy comes when we are on a seashore somewhere. So as often as possible, that's where you will find our family gathered.
Now here's where a lot of people would tell us that being in the sun too much, or maybe at all, is an invitation to skin cancer and if we absolutely must endure sun exposure, we need to slather ourselves and our kids with sunscreen.
The bad news is that all of this anti-sun hysteria has caused a lot of problems for modern folks. Maybe the biggest bugaboo of sun avoidance is that one of the best ways to get your much needed vitamin D is through sun exposure. If you are hiding from the sun, you may well be vitamin D deficient, and if you are, you are in good company. Studies show that perhaps as much as 85% of Americans are vitamin D deficient, and that, in our opinion, is a public health crisis.
How could a vitamin nicknamed 'the sunshine vitamin' NOT be wonderful? Vitamin D helps fight bone loss, infection and abnormal cell growth and has been linked to the prevention and cure of a host of conditions including cardiovascular disease, blood pressure issues, reproductive issues, high cholesterol, neurological disorders, kidney failure...we could go on, but we'll stop. Conversely, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, autism, inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Why are we giving you a lesson on vitamin D? Because you need it and some sunshine may help you get it. At My Healthy Bliss we supplement ourselves and our families with 5000 iu of vitamin D orally daily, even though we live in a sunny climate. When we do head for the beach, which is often, we monitor our time in the sun, and after a few minutes of exposure, we do use suncscreen. For our younger kids...the sunscreen goes on first after only a minute or two.
But you know us. We don't use just any sunscreen because like so many other modern products, sunscreens are full of parabens and chemicals that are downright unhealthy to put on your skin or inhale. Certainly we don't want to put those kinds of chemicals on our kids.
Naturally, you don't have to settle for yuck in your sunscreen because you can get clean sunscreens at My Healthy Bliss. And there are plenty of choices too. Continuous spray spf 30, moisturizing shea butter spf 30, and even prickly pear based spf 30. There are dry oil sprays (cool!), after sun lotions and sprays and spf 50 lotions for you and the kids.
Go ahead and enjoy your fun in the sun with sunscreen from My Healthy Bliss.
