For real. There are plenty of nutrition experts out there who advocate eating several smaller meals and snacks a day instead of two or three big meals. Eating less food but more often may possibly speed metabolism, decrease appetite and increase energy levels. Whether or not you agree, let's face it: sometimes we just need a snack, and it's hard to be nice until we get one.
We find here at My Healthy Bliss that there seems to be a magic point in the afternoon of most every work day that causes our brains to simultaneously agree that it is snack time! We also find that this afternoon snack search is often pursued more urgently and is accompanied by more general aggressive behavior among those of us who might be actively engaged in a weight loss program... Unfortunately it isn't always easy to find wholesome, healthy snacks, much less wholesome, healthy snacks that aren't going to break the calorie bank. Unless, of course, you're at My Healthy Bliss.
Now we are only too painfully aware that there are more UN-healthy, bad-for-you snack choices out there than healthy ones. The funny commercials come to mind whose slogan is 'You're not yourself when you're hungry', depicting people turning into rude, whiny versions of themselves until they get a snack. And what is this seemingly 'healthy' snack that gives these snack-deprived folks the energy they need to return to their normal selves? A candy bar! Good grief...
Truth be told, at My Healthy Bliss we LOVE our snacks. We have done some serious searching and researching to find the perfect collection of good-for-you, fun-to-eat snacks for ourselves, and we are happy to share the results of our quest with you.
One of our favorite go-to snacks is 100% organic yellow popcorn. NOT the micro-wave kind. So simple and quick, popcorn offers filling fiber for a great low calorie snack. We like to pop our popcorn in an air popper, but if you don't have one, just put a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil or olive oil in a heavy pot and pour in 1/3 cup popcorn. Cover pan and shake over med-high heat until popcorn starts and then stops popping. Spray with a little olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Boom. Best. Snack. Ever.
For the ultimate super healthy snack, not much can beat yogurt you make yourself. Once you try it you'll never buy store bought yogurt again. We absolutely love our Yogourmet yogurt maker, which we have had for many, many years. A little milk and the starter of your choice and...voila! Your very own homemade yogurt is born! You can make healthy, hunger-busting smoothies or enjoy your delicious yogurt with a little granola or a few berries or...the possibilities are endless.
Exotic, organic cocoa nibs offer protein, anti-oxidants, magnesium and vitamin C...and they are delicious. Organic raw nuts and seeds and organic coconut satisfy your snacking needs and are good for you too! And for times when you or your kids just gotta have something sweet, nothing beats our organic lollipops made from pure fruit extracts (with no yucky dyes or artificial, chemical ingredients).
There's no reason to let un-healthy snacks sabatoge your health when you can enjoy nutritious, healthful snacks from My Healthy Bliss!
